Our Recommendations For House Siding

Making recommendations is tricky business, we understand this. Our recommendations for house siding are based on what we hear from contractors and installers as well as from the latest Consumer Reports siding ratings. Always speak with several contractors to find out what products they recommend and which products they have had success with in the past.

fiber cement siding

Engineered Wood

Heartland CedarMAX - CedarMAX from Heartland is a composite engineered wood siding that provides good rigidity and therefore straighter walls than a non foam backed product. CedarMAX should run about $2 per square foot for the product itself (add in $1 psf for additional materials and $2 psf for installation and you could have this product installed on a simple straight forward project for $5 psf total). CedarMAX comes in 17 different color options, 3 profile options, and has a .050 thickness. The product received a rating of 83 from Consumer Reports, the highest rated product in its class and one of the recommended products from CR.

Fiber Cement

Nichiha Sierra Premium - The Nichiha Sierra is a fiber cement siding that is widely regarded as a nice looking panel, but also provides the strength and durability of a quality cement board. The Sierra Premium Smooth can be order already primed and should run $1.60 per square foot, which is about double what consumers would pay for a non foam backed vinyl. The board is available in a single profile and has a .50 thickness. Nichiha makes nice products, although they only have one production plant in Georgia and may be difficult to find to further away you are located. The product received a rating of 76 from Consumer Reports, the highest rated product in its class and one of the recommended products from CR.

HardiePlank Select Cedarmill - The Select Cedarmill is another fiber cement board that has the strength and backing from James Hardie, a leader and innovator in fiber cement boards. These boards are .313 thick and can also be order already primed - this siding costs roughly $2 per square foot for the product itself. The product received a rating of 73 from Consumer Reports and is one of their recommended fiber cement products.

Shingles & Shakes

Cedar Impressions - The Impressions are vinyl shingles that are one of the thickest and most durable cladding options at 1" thick. They are not cheap - expect to pay approximately $3.15 psf for this product. The Impressions series offers 8 different styles, textures, sizes and colors to choose from. The product received a rating of 95 from Consumer Reports, the highest rated product in its class and one of the recommended products from CR.

Vinyl Products

Royal Duraplank - The Duraplank is a foam backed double hem siding that comes in 3 profiles, 12 color options and has a .054 thickness. It should run about $2.10 per square foot. The product received a rating of 80 from Consumer Reports, their second highest rating after the Heartland CedarMAX.

KP Norman Rockwell - The Norman Rockwell is a non foam back vinyl that comes in 2 profiles, 22 color options and has a .044 thickness. It is less expensive than the Duraplank (mostly because it isn't insulated) and runs about $1.65 per square foot. The product received a rating of 79 from Consumer Reports.

Norandex Polar Wall Plus - This product is an insulated cladding that comes in 20 color selections and has a .046 thickness. It shold run about $2 per square foot. Just like the Norman Rockwell, this product received a rating of 79 from Consumer Reports and is one of their recommended selections.

HeartTech Polymer - This is Heartland's entry level vinyl siding that comes in 4 profiles, 22 colors and has a thickness of .044. It is extremely reasonable in cost at around $.75 per square foot. This product was rated just below that two above (both of which are priced considerably higher) with a Consumer Reports rating of 77.
